Principal Lecturer of Spanish

David G. Latimer is Principal Lecturer of Spanish in the Department of Romance Languages at the University of Georgia. He earned his Ph.D. in Language Education from UGA in 2009, following an M.A. in History from Georgia Southern University, an M.A. in Religion from Florida State University, and a B.A. in Spanish from Georgia Southern College.

Dr. Latimer specializes in intermediate and advanced Spanish language instruction, with particular emphasis on oral communication, task-based learning, and content-based pedagogy. His teaching is informed by research in second language acquisition and bilingual education, as well as by extensive professional and personal experience living and working abroad. He regularly teaches core language courses and Honors sections, including SPAN 2001/2002 (and Honors equivalents), SPAN 3010 (Cultural Dialogues), and SPAN 3020 (Advanced Composition). His courses are known for their rigor, inclusivity, and sustained focus on student confidence and communicative competence.

A hallmark of Dr. Latimer’s pedagogy is the integration of Latin American cultural, social, and historical contexts into language instruction. Drawing on long-term experience in Argentina and Costa Rica, he challenges students to engage critically with contemporary issues while developing advanced speaking and writing skills in Spanish.

Dr. Latimer has played a major role in international education at UGA. He served as Director of UGA en Buenos Aires (2009–2016) and later as Lead Faculty for the Spanish Language and Cultural Immersion Program in San José, Costa Rica (2021–2023). He is also deeply engaged with the Jere W. Morehead Honors College, where he mentors high-achieving students and supports competitive scholarship applications.
