Students majoring in Romance Languages are immersed in the rich and challenging study of language and culture. Courses in linguistics, literature, and specialized topics lead to advanced levels of speaking and writing proficiency, the development of intercultural social skills, and an understanding of the vast Romance Language-speaking world. Students may choose to pursue proficiency in a combination of any two Romance languages, or focus solely on Italian or Portuguese through a single language option. Undergraduates, especially those combining language study with preparation for careers with international components in areas such as arts and design, business, health professions, journalism, law, public service, and publishing will find ways to enhance their desired competencies through our sponsored study abroad programs, residential language communities, service learning and experiential opportunities, conversation tables, and cultural events throughout the year.

With the Romance Languages major students may choose to pursue proficiency in a combination of any two languages, or select the single language option in Italian or Portuguese to focus solely on one language in enhanced interdisciplinary studies.  Talk to our department's advisors and faculty to learn more.

What you will learn

The Romance Languages major is a gateway to employment, professional school in medicine and law, and graduate school. The major curriculum fosters creativity and cognitive flexibility while enhancing perception and interpretation skills. There are a multitude of ways to acquire unique combinations of experience and knowledge. The goals of each student are considered and mentoring is personalized to suit their post-graduation objectives. Interdisciplinary certificate programs can offer a distinctive niche and are often used, along with internships and short-term work abroad, to customize a student’s entry into a desired career in areas such as art and travel industries; government service; health and legal professions; international aid and development; management and administration; media and content creation; as well as careers in primary, secondary, and higher education.
